- Fires in Greece: Woman killed

A woman has lost her life in the massive fires in the northeastern suburbs of the Greek capital, Athens. Firefighters found her body in the morning in a factory building that was completely destroyed by the fire. Meanwhile, the fires have been contained in many places. By late evening, a spokesperson for the fire department said that there were still active fire sites, but they were currently under control. However, he could not give the all-clear: there were still new outbreaks, and the wind was expected to pick up again during the day.

The flames reached the Athenian suburbs of Vrilissia and Penteli on Monday afternoon, burning down or damaging many houses. Due to the massive scale of the fires, which had spread to a 30-kilometer front driven by the wind, the EU's civil protection mechanism was activated. Aid is coming from countries including the Czech Republic, France, and Italy, Serbia, Romania, and Turkey.

Firefighters from various countries, including Italy and Serbia, have joined forces to extinguish the firefighting efforts in the Athenian suburbs. Despite the assistance, the spokesperson warned that new outbreaks could occur due to the anticipated increase in wind speed.
