- Festival blaze in Ferris wheel area results in numerous casualties
At the Highfield Festival close to Leipzig, a blaze ignited on the Ferris wheel in the evening hours. According to a dpa journalist at the scene, several individuals sustained injuries. Fortunately, no deaths were reported initially.
A spokesperson for the fire department communicated to dpa that the situation was now being managed. Unfortunately, they couldn't confirm right away if there were still individuals in danger. Initially, both the police and the organizers chose not to issue any statements.
Two gondolas on the Ferris wheel went up in flames approximately at 21:00. Various people needed medical attention for burn wounds, as mentioned by the dpa journalist. As a result, the festival situated at Lake Störmthal, a prominent rock and pop event, was momentarily halted.
The festival organizers quickly declared an emergency due to the blast on the Ferris wheel. Despite the chaos, emergency services worked diligently to evacuate any remaining individuals.
