Female Passenger Perishes During Voyage on Ancient Viking Vessel
Adventure turns into tragedy: A 29-year-old woman encountered an unfortunate fate during a daring voyage from the Faroe Islands to Norway in a replica Viking ship. According to Norwegian rescue services in the south, the ship capsized off Stad on the west coast, and the open waters claimed the lady's life.
Fortunately, five crew members were plucked from the chilly waters and were reported to be in good health. However, initial reports pointed to a sixth member missing, prompting a search operation.
The missing individual was later confirmed to be the American or Mexican national, living in Florida, who perished in the icy waters. Her lifeless body was discovered the next morning by a coast guard boat just a few hundred meters away from the capsized ship, and she was then pronounced dead at the scene.
The six-person team had embarked on the adventure of sailing and rowing along the nearly 930-kilometer stretch between the two islands in the replica Viking ship "Naddoddur" as part of the "Viking Voyage" project.
Swiss skipper and expedition leader Andy Fitze, along with his team, were determined to bring the captivating world of Vikings and maritime history to life. The journey was fuelled by the sea-worthy replica ship, which relied solely on oars and sails, as reported by Local.fo from the Faroe Islands. The crew had set sail from Tvøroyri on the Faroese island of Suduroy over the weekend.
The 6-person crew, including the unfortunate woman from Norway, embarked on their journey from Tvøroyri on Suduroy. Despite the successful rescue of five crew members, the Norwegian navy confirmed the death of the Norwegian woman off the west coast of Stad.
