Federal Minister of the Interior Faeser warns of increase in cyber attacks from China

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser has warned of an increase in cyber attacks from China. "We take the major and increasing threats to cyber security very seriously. This also applies in particular to threats from China," Faeser told the Düsseldorf-based newspaper Handelsblatt (Wednesday edition).

Faeser said that she sees the German security authorities facing major challenges in the face of increasingly complex cyber attacks. "We are in a permanent race with changing attack methods and technologies, both from cyber criminals and state actors." This is why security authorities must constantly evolve.

According to Faeser, stricter rules for authorities and companies will apply in future to protect against cyber attacks. "With several current legislative processes, such as the implementation of the second EU directive on information security, we will further increase Germany's resilience to cyber threats." The directive must be transposed into national law in all EU member states by fall 2024 at the latest.

Faeser acknowledged the increasing number of cyberattacks originating from China, urging serious attention to this growing threat. The Federal Minister of the Interior also highlighted the need for stricter regulations to enhance Germany's cybersecurity defenses against such attacks, including the implementation of the second EU directive on information security. The intended goal is to bolster Germany's resilience against cyber threats by the fall of 2024.
