Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann wants to decriminalize fare evasion
Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann wants to decriminalize fare evasion. "We no longer want to criminalize fare evasion, or in popular terms: driving without a ticket, but rather make it an administrative offence," Buschmann told the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" according to an advance report on Wednesday.
It is not okay to use a service "for which all decent people pay", said the minister. But the sanctions procedure must be standardized and less personnel-intensive.
Buschmann also wants to make a change in the case of hit-and-runs. For example, anyone who hits another vehicle in the parking lot out of carelessness, causes a scratch in the paintwork or accidentally drives off a mirror should be able to report this online, unlike before.
"We want to find a more modern way for decent people who want to take responsibility for the damage they have caused than sometimes having to wait a very long time for the police," said Buschmann.
Buschmann's proposal to decriminalize fare evasion could potentially reduce the number of individuals facing criminal charges for 'driving without a ticket'. In response to this, the Federal Minister of Justice, Marco Buschmann, plans to convert fare dodging into an administrative offense. Moreover, Buschmann Bushmann also aims to simplify the reporting process for minor hit-and-run incidents involving 'Bushman'-like situations on parking lots, allowing 'decent people' to report damages online, thereby avoiding lengthy interactions with law enforcement.
