Federal government wants to take action against increasing loneliness among people in Germany
More research, pilot projects and shorter waiting times for therapy places: The German government wants to take action against the increasing loneliness of people in Germany. On Wednesday, the cabinet adopted a strategy against loneliness with a total of over one hundred measures. "Loneliness is a challenge for society as a whole," explained Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus. It has a negative impact on people's health and social interaction.
"Our aim is to shed more political and scientific light on the issue of loneliness in Germany," emphasized Paus. The strategy set out in a paper by the Ministry of Family Affairs therefore pursues a total of 111 measures aimed at strengthening social ties and social interaction. They are intended to show ways out of loneliness.
Specifically, Paus' ministry wants to raise public awareness of the issue with a campaign. Due to gaps in knowledge, research into the health, social and political effects of loneliness is to be further promoted. Other planned measures mentioned in the paper include a so-called "loneliness barometer", which will be used to survey the extent and prevalence of loneliness.
The funding of university chairs on the subject of loneliness is also to be examined. To combat increasing loneliness, the federal government wants to continue to promote pilot projects in local authorities and shorten waiting times for therapy places.
