Federal Foreign Office calls for safe places for civilians in the Gaza Strip
The Federal Foreign Office has described the end of the ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas organization as a bitter setback. This applies to the hostages being held in tunnels as well as to the population in Gaza, who are dependent on humanitarian aid and have to fear for their lives, said a spokesperson for the Federal Foreign Office. The expansion of the fighting to the entire Gaza Strip is now also affecting areas where people had sought protection at Israel's request.
"The humanitarian emergency threatens to intensify," he said. And: "Hence our appeal - here from this office in recent weeks and now again - to allow the necessary humanitarian aid, including fuel, into the Gaza Strip to supply the people."
The southern part of the Gaza Strip is said to be home to 1.8 million people, 80 percent of the population, the spokesperson said. "And that of course increases the risk of civilians coming to harm during military operations." It is important to Germany that Israel's actions take this into account and avoid civilian suffering. "And it is just as important that Israel adheres to international humanitarian law," he demanded. This was emphasized in all channels of communication.
The Federal Foreign Office hopes and assumes that it will still be possible to leave the danger zone in the Gaza Strip. It is expected that Israel will not only ask civilians to leave the danger zone, "but that they are actually and de facto able to find safe shelter elsewhere".
