Federal Cartel Office advises drivers to consistently compare prices when filling up
The German Cartel Office advises motorists and motorists to compare prices consistently when refueling. "Price surges at motorway gas stations have significantly increased in the last few weeks," explained Cartel Office President Andreas Mundt. Given that it's the summer vacation season and many are embarking on long road trips, using fuel apps and comparing prices is all the more worthwhile, Mundt suggested.
The Cartel Office published its quarterly report on fuel price development on Friday. Accordingly, the average prices for gasoline have risen by 5.6 cents to 1.873 euros per liter, and for diesel by 4.1 cents to 1.684 euros. However, prices at motorway gas stations have risen even more significantly: "For example, filling up 60 liters at motorway stations currently costs over 24 euros more," the Bonn authority explained.
As for daily price fluctuations, it's still the case that there are usually many small price decreases and few strong price increases per day. However, there's a noticeable "price peak in the afternoon," as the Cartel Office put it. There are also noticeable regional differences.
Drivers should consider refueling at stations with competitive prices to mitigate the impact of price fluctuations, as advised by the Federal Cartel Office. Despite the quarterly rise in average prices for gasoline and diesel, the price difference between regular stations and motorway gas stations can be substantial, reaching over 24 euros for 60 liters of fuel.
