Federal Audit Office calls for more efficiency in government budget management
Following the far-reaching ruling by the Constitutional Court in mid-November, the Federal Audit Office is calling for greater efficiency in the government's budget management. "This certainly includes prioritizing spending. The federal government should also finally review all subsidies and benefits for effectiveness and possible false incentives," said the President of the Court of Audit, Kay Scheller, on Thursday.
The federal government's financial leeway is dwindling all the time. The level of debt had grown enormously in recent years, and now the higher interest expenses were also restricting the scope for action.
The judges in Karlsruhe had cut 60 billion euros from the climate fund KTF because it had been shifted there in an unconstitutional manner. In recent years, the fund has become the most important financing vehicle for climate protection and the energy transition. Other special funds are now also being reviewed to see whether they can be used as previously intended.
