FDP vies for replacement of Strack-Zimmermann

In the coming weeks, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann will vacate her seat in the German parliament, the Bundestag, and move on to the European Parliament. This opens up the opportunity for a new leader to take charge of the Defense Committee within the Free Democratic Party (FDP). After a heated competition, Marcus Faber emerged as the victor and will now assume the position.

Faber, a 40-year-old member of the Bundestag, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Defense Committee - a role previously held by Strack-Zimmermann. The election process included a vote within his FDP faction, which he won.

As a member of the Defense Committee, Faber will be responsible for overseeing parliamentary control of the Defense Ministry and the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces). His duties also include involvement in the adoption of the defense budget and procurement of equipment and material. The FDP faction, as the largest faction in the committee, has the power to nominate a candidate for the chairmanship, who must then be officially voted on by committee members.

Faber has some experience in the defense realm as he had served as the defense policy spokesperson of the FDP parliamentary group. However, he stepped down from this position in 2022 following a controversial statement about a visit by Chancellor Olaf Scholz to the Defense Committee. There was speculation that Müller would take over his previous position as defense policy spokesperson for the FDP parliamentary group and chairman of his party in the committee.

Strack-Zimmermann is leaving the chairmanship of the committee due to her transition to European politics. She is recognized as the lead candidate for the FDP and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) for the European election. In the Bundestag, she has been a steadfast advocate for more substantial arms supplies to Ukraine and has not been afraid to engage in conflict. Strack-Zimmermann has been a part of the committee since 2021. She plans to resign from her Bundestag seat on July 15.
