FDP ministries plan wave of promotions

The traffic lights are struggling with the budget. While Finance Minister Lindner insists on an austerity course, he also wants to promote 28 employees in his ministry. This is planned and necessary. A second FDP-led ministry is also planning upgrades.

According to a media report, there will be a wave of promotions in FDP-led federal ministries shortly before the end of the year despite the budget crisis. While the construction, environment and family ministries have only announced one promotion each and the economics ministry wants to promote five employees, 59 names are listed in the federal justice and finance ministries, reports the digital media service "Table.Media".

The wave of promotions would come at a delicate time. 17 billion euros will have to be cut from the budget for 2024. According to the report, the Ministry of Finance explained that the upgrades affecting its own department were a normal step. It concerns the promotion of employees who "were assessed as government directors with the status of head of unit as of August 2022", Table.Media quoted a spokesperson for the authority as saying. These promotions are part of the "regular personnel development for managers" at the BMF. "The 28 promotion positions result from retirement and other vacancies."

New state secretary, new head of department

One of the vacancies in the Ministry of Finance certainly has to do with the resignation of the long-standing State Secretary Werner Gatzer, who was responsible for Department II - Federal Budget. With a brief interruption, he had held his office as State Secretary since 2005 under Ministers Peer Steinbrück, Wolfgang Schäuble, Olaf Scholz and Christian Lindner. In a message to his staff at the Ministry of Finance, Lindner linked the Constitutional Court's decision regarding the federal budget to Gatzer.

Gatzer will now be replaced by Wolf Reuter, the current head of the department for fundamental financial policy and economic issues. According to the organization chart, it is not yet clear who will head his department in the future. Regarding the new State Secretary, the Ministry stated: "Financial policy is facing major challenges that need to be addressed both in terms of facts and economic policy." Reuter has the best qualifications for this.
