According to the Federal Police, around 830,000 checks were carried out in the first three weeks of the European Championships and 603 outstanding arrest warrants were executed.

FDP in favor of extending all border controls

603 open arrest warrants executed, 150 smugglers detained, 146 people denied entry - this is the balance after three weeks of EM control checks. The FDP is satisfied. "This is a real contribution to limiting irregular migration to Germany," says Djir-Sarai and wants more.

The FDP wants to extend the stationary controls at all German external borders by the Federal Police for one year. Initially, these comprehensive controls were only planned to be implemented until shortly after the completion of the European Football Championship in mid-July. FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai told "Bild": "Stationary border controls have proven effective. Their balance can be seen. This is a real contribution to limiting irregular migration to Germany. Therefore, a one-year extension after the EM is necessary."

Temporary controls at all German Schengen internal borders are currently in effect until July 19th due to the football tournament. In addition, the Federal Interior Ministry announced at the end of May that the stationary controls at the German-Polish, Czech, and Swiss borders, which have been in effect since the fall of 2023, would be extended by half a year until mid-December. This was justified with the goal of combating smuggling crime and limiting irregular migration. Stationary controls at the German-Austrian land border have been in effect since fall 2015.

According to the Federal Police's statements, approximately 830,000 controls were carried out in the first three weeks of the measures related to the EM, and 603 open arrest warrants were executed. One hundred fifty smugglers were temporarily detained, and 146 people were denied entry who had previously been deported to an earlier date. However, the Police Union (GdP) in Brandenburg, in view of fixed controls at the Polish border, does not see a significant effect in reducing irregular migration. Stationary controls would not achieve the same effectiveness from a police tactical perspective as possible mobile controls, it was stated.

  1. Despite the FDP's satisfaction with the results of the EM border controls, the Police Union in Brandenburg questions their effectiveness in reducing irregular migration, suggesting that mobile controls might be more impactful.
  2. Bijan Djir-Sarai, the FDP General Secretary, acknowledges the success of stationary border controls in limiting irregular migration and calls for a one-year extension following the European Football Championship.
  3. Politics and crime intertwine in the discourse of border controls, with parties like the FDP using the latter to justify the former, aiming to limit irregular immigration into Germany.
