Bürgerschaft Rodriguez, Burghers, Municipal Assembly - FDP-Deputy Treuenfels-Frowein has switched to the CDU

The FDP parliamentarian Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein has switched to the CDU and is set to lead the party behind CDU chief Dennis Thering in the upcoming Hamburg city council elections on a list position two. Thering stated, "We have really managed a major coup for the CDU in Hamburg." Treuenfels-Frowein announced her CDU Hamburg membership this morning. For the upcoming city council elections, predicted to be on March 2, 2025, Thering will propose her for list position two.

"With Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein, we can gain the strongest and most profiled liberal voice for the CDU in our city," Thering said. A special CDU parliamentary group meeting is planned for Monday morning at 9:00 AM to welcome the previously unaffiliated city councilor into the CDU parliamentary group.

Treuenfels-Frowein can no longer represent FDP positions at the federal level

Treuenfels-Frowein justified her switch due to her inability to represent FDP positions in the traffic light coalition at the federal level. She mentioned issues such as the cannabis regulation, citizens' income, and shortened naturalization waiting periods. She had been considering the switch for a long time. "The step was not an easy one for me, but I am going with full conviction," the 62-year-old stated.

She stands for a strong rule of law, performance-oriented education policy, a strong economy, and a transportation policy that does not exclude anyone, Treuenfels-Frowein said, looking at the political situation in Hamburg. "And honestly, I believe that only with a very, very strong CDU can we initiate a political change here in Hamburg."

The mother of three entered politics through the citizens' initiative "We want to learn" in 2008, which successfully opposed the plans of the then black-red coalition to found primary schools. From there, she joined the FDP, and in 2011, she entered the city council with the FDP. Between 2017 and 2020, she served as the FDP city council faction leader.

In the 2020 election with Treuenfels-Frowein as the lead candidate, the FDP failed to surpass the five-percent hurdle. However, she secured a direct mandate in the Blankenese constituency and became the only FDP politician to make it into the city council.

Her relationship with the FDP Hamburg was considered difficult. Hamburg FDP chairman Sonja Jacobsen stated, "An estrangement between Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein and the party was clearly noticeable in recent years." FDP city councilor Sami Musa – who had switched from the SPD to the Liberals in January 2022 – stated, "A party switch is always a far-reaching and very personal decision." He wished his former councilor colleague all the best.

  1. Despite being a former FDP parliamentarian, Treuenfels-Frowein will not be representing FDP positions in the upcoming Municipal election in Germany, as she has switched to the CDU and is expected to hold list position two.
  2. In Hamburg, the CDU has secured a significant boost for their upcoming city council elections with the addition of Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein, a prominent figure known for her stance on strong rule of law and performance-oriented education policy.
  3. The mother of three, who entered politics through a citizens' assembly called "We want to learn" in 2008, has now made the switch to the CDU, citing difficulties in representing FDP positions in the traffic light coalition at the federal level.
  4. After serving as the FDP city council faction leader and being the only FDP politician to make it into the city council in the 2020 election, Treuenfels-Frowein's relationship with the FDP Hamburg was described as difficult by Hamburg FDP chairman Sonja Jacobsen.
