Farewell to Pandas at Zoo Atlanta after a 25-year Tenure

The departure of the pandas from Zoo Atlanta is a mix of sadness and happiness. For over 25 years, these pandas have been a iconic symbol of the zoo and the city, featuring on billboards around Atlanta and being the star attraction of the zoo's LIVE panda cam.

Soft and cuddly pandas are not common in US zoos. Until two bears arrived in San Diego in June, the pandas in Atlanta were the only ones in the United States. They have served as adorable representatives of their species, drawing in millions of visitors and educating them about the difficulties pandas face in the wild.

Dr. Sam Rivera, Vice President of Animal Health at Zoo Atlanta, who has worked with the pandas since their arrival, acknowledges that saying goodbye will be difficult. However, the exchange of pandas between China and international zoos, such as Zoo Atlanta, is an essential component of helping this endangered species. By enabling pandas to be studied at various zoos, researchers can conduct experiments in different settings, uncovering insights that might be overlooked in their natural habitat. Collaborations with non-zoological educational and research institutions are also promoted through these partnerships. International collaborations have aided researchers in better understanding panda biology, behavior, and environmental challenges.

Significant milestones

Zoo Atlanta achieved several milestones with the pandas over the past 25 years. In 2016, Lun Lun and Yang Yang gave birth to Ya Lun and Xi Lun, their second set of twins, making Zoo Atlanta the first US institution to raise two sets of twin pandas. The zoo is proud of its achievements in panda reproduction and pregnancy monitoring. Other significant accomplishments include gaining insights into giant panda maternal behavior and determining that giant pandas have color vision comparable to other bears.

One of the advantages of pandas in zoos outside of China is the opportunity they provide the public to learn about the endangered species. Zoo Atlanta says it has generated over $17 million for panda conservation in China, primarily used to support various nature reserves. The once-endangered species is making a comeback. According to the World Wildlife Fund, there were about a thousand pandas in the wild in the 1980s. As of 2016, the giant panda had been removed from the endangered species list, and its population has increased by 17% in the past decade.

Why are giant pandas important anyway?

Dr. Sam Rivera serves in the role of Vice President of Animal Health at Zoo Atlanta.

Although they are no longer endangered, pandas remain vulnerable. Zoo Atlanta reports that the total number of giant pandas is still low for maintaining a sustainable population. The challenges pandas face primarily stem from habitat loss, and only 61% of China's panda population is protected by government reserves. Their habitats, the bamboo forests of China, are also home to many other species. Pandas play a crucial role in their environment, as they help disperse seeds and contribute to the health and diversity of the forest. By protecting pandas, we help conserve these valuable ecosystems.

How to help

If you're concerned about giant pandas, there are ways to help. Supporting reputable charities dedicated to panda conservation is a direct way to contribute. These organizations focus on scientific research, education programs, and habitat preservation.

Zoo Atlanta is involved in field conservation programs both locally and internationally, as well as supporting funding for other conservation organizations and projects, research, and education programs at their zoo.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is an international non-profit conservation organization divided into two parts: the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. They provide sustainable conservation solutions through education, wildlife healthcare, and science.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has been involved in giant panda conservation for decades, focusing on habitat preservation and policy advocacy.

Pandas International is an organization specifically focused on the preservation and propagation of giant pandas, supporting breeding centers and research in China.

You can make a difference by visiting other reputable zoos and supporting their research, as well as spreading the word about conservation. Sharing information, supporting panda-focused initiatives, and being a steward of the environment all contribute to the cause.

As Zoo Atlanta prepares to bid farewell to its pandas this fall, the arrival of new pandas at the San Diego Zoo and the Smithsonian National Zoo represents an ongoing commitment to saving these extraordinary mammals. It serves as a reminder of our vital role in protecting not only the giant panda but all animals so that they can be celebrated for generations to come.

And if you'd like to send off the Zoo Atlanta pandas in style, the zoo will be holding a “Panda-Palooza” event on October 5, 2024. For more details, visit zooatlanata.org.

Despite the departure, Zoo Atlanta has played a significant role in panda conservation within the United States. The us (Zoo Atlanta) has raised funds for panda conservation in China, contributing over $17 million, and been involved in research and education programs.

The pandas have also served as a bridge between Zoo Atlanta and international collaborations, aiding researchers in understanding panda biology, behavior, and environmental challenges, with benefits extending beyond the us.
