Faeser reduces asylum seeker screening

The federal and state governments want to limit irregular migration. Asylum procedures are also to become faster. Interior Minister Faeser implements the resolutions a few days later: the responsible authority is instructed by email to soften the rules for checking asylum seekers.

In order to speed up asylum procedures, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser wants to waive the more intensive screening of migrants, according to a media report. According to a report in the "Bild" newspaper, security checks in particular are to be reduced. The newspaper refers to an email from the SPD-led ministry to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) in which the cost-cutting measures are listed in detail.

According to this, fewer ID cards or documents are to be checked in future. According to the report, even if no passport is available, the smartphone check that was previously used to determine nationality will no longer be carried out. Searches in EU computers for asylum seekers' entries will also be thinned out, statistics on the level of education will no longer be compiled and language and dialect recognition will only take place in individual cases.

"Security remains a priority"

"The BAMF is implementing measures to speed up asylum procedures in coordination with the BMI," Bild quotes a spokesperson from the Ministry of the Interior as saying. However, security "remains a high priority". The Ministry of the Interior also issued an email ordering the suspension of the return of Dublin cases to Greece. According to the report, the reason for this is that the Mediterranean country rejects more than 95 percent of requests anyway.

Following hours of negotiations on Tuesday night, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the 16 state premiers agreed on a comprehensive package to control migration and curb illegal immigration. With reference to the more than 300,000 new asylum applications expected this year, the resolution states that irregular migration is increasingly becoming a problem, particularly in terms of accommodation and integration. The package provides for accelerated procedures for asylum seekers, fewer benefits and more deportations. The CDU/CSU criticized the resolutions as insufficient.
