The strengthened controls to France end on July 19th. Faeser announced a new registration in the EU.

Faeser extends border controls to France

With the end of the EM, intensive border controls of the Federal Police towards most EU neighboring countries are expected to cease. However, controls at the German-French border will be extended due to the Olympics in Paris, Faeser announces. CDU and FDP are campaigning for a general extension of the mission.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has announced that temporary border controls at the German-French border, due to the Olympics in Paris, will be extended. This is to ensure "maximum security in close cooperation with French authorities."

The controls will be registered with the European Union shortly. There will also still be controls at the borders to Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg until July 19, due to the European Football Championship.

In addition, there are currently temporary controls at the borders to Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Poland. These are intended to cross the routes of smugglers and limit irregular migration, the ministry stated. The controls at the Austrian border are currently in effect until November 11, at the Polish, Swiss, and Czech borders until December 15.

Those who call for continued border controls towards neighboring countries like the Netherlands or Denmark must also justify the serious consequences for commuters, travelers, trade, and the economy - and can, in fact, do so in accordance with European law, Faeser explained.

She responded to a discussion about extending controls at all German borders. This was advocated not only by the CDU, but also by the FDP faction leader Christian Dürr. The Olympic Summer Games are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11.

Nancy Faeser, the Federal Interior Minister, has highlighted the importance of maintaining maximum security at the German-French border during the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris, leading to an extension of temporary border controls. This decision, however, raises questions about the impact on commuters, travelers, trade, and the economy towards neighboring countries like Netherlands and Denmark, as pointed out by Faeser. Despite the CDU and FDP calling for a general extension of border controls, the necessity and legality of such measures need to be thoroughly considered and justified.
