Faeser announces upcoming controls at the German-French border

Before and during the Olympic Games in Paris, border controls will continue further along the German-French border. This was announced by German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) according to her ministry starting from Sunday. In close cooperation with French authorities, "maximum security" is to be ensured.

The controls will be registered at the European Union shortly. Additionally, there will be controls at the borders to Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg until July 19 due to the European Football Championship.

Furthermore, there are also temporary controls at the national borders to Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, and Poland. These are intended to cross smuggling routes and limit irregular migration, the ministry stated. The controls at the Austrian border are currently in effect until November 11, at the Polish, Swiss, and Czech borders until December 15.

"Who demands further border controls towards neighboring countries like the Netherlands or Denmark must also justify the serious consequences for commuters, travelers, trade, and the economy - and can, in fact, justify this in accordance with European law," Faeser explained.

She reacted to a discussion about extending border controls at all German borders. For this, among others, FDP fraction leader Christian Dürr had spoken out. The Olympic Summer Games are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11.

Faeser mentioned the need for border controls with neighboring countries like Netherlands and Denmark, highlighting potential impacts on commuters, travelers, trade, and the economy. This extension of controls is subject to justification in accordance with European law. During the Olympic Summer Games in Paris, Faeser emphasized the ongoing border controls along the German-French border to ensure maximum security.
