Extreme heat followed by thunderstorms
It's hot in Germany and the humidity is making it increasingly uncomfortable. Midweek, the energy builds up in the form of thunderstorms that spread out. Severe weather is threatened.
Caught between heat and lightning, it's going to be a rough few days in Germany. A high-pressure ridge, formed by the Baltic high "Maschal" and high "Leander" over the Balkans, has the weather here in its grip. This brings temperatures of over 35 degrees in some regions. However, thunderstorms are already being triggered over France by low "Petra".
In the coming days, the high-pressure influence will continue to shift eastward. On Wednesday, a thunderstorm low will be right in the middle of Germany, increasing the risk of severe weather. On Thursday, a high-pressure wedge will push into Germany from the southwest. But let's take it one step at a time. A closer look at the details reveals:
On Tuesday, the weather in Eastern Germany presents its sunny side. In Berlin, Brandenburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, temperatures are pleasant, and the air remains largely free of humidity. However, the picture is different in the south and northwest of Germany: In the moist and humid air, locally strong thunderstorms can form, accompanied by heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds. Temperatures will reach around 25 degrees at the Baltic Sea, rising to widely 30 to 35 degrees inland, while up to 37 degrees are possible in the southwest.
On Wednesday, the thunderstorms will spread further and take on severe characteristics in some places. While the sun will shine longer in the east, the probability of thunderstorms will also increase there in the afternoon and evening. The highest temperatures will range from 24 degrees in Emden to 34 degrees in Saxony and the Niederlausitz.
On Thursday, the severe weather will subside, but thunderstorms can occur again from the south to the Lausitz region. In the west, a friendly mix of sun and clouds is expected. Friday will be changeable in the north and west with showers at temperatures of 21 to 26 degrees. In the south and east, isolated thunderstorms are possible, but the risk of severe weather will decrease significantly. Temperatures will again reach summer-like 26 to 31 degrees.
Despite the high temperatures exceeding 35 degrees in some regions due to the influence of high-pressure ridges "Maschal" and "Leander", Germany remains at risk of severe thunderstorms. On Wednesday, a thunderstorm low will be directly over Germany, increasing the likelihood of extreme weather conditions.
