War of aggression against Ukraine - Explosions in Russian territory after Ukrainian attack

A Ukrainian drone attack, according to Russian authorities, took place in the Woronesh region and caused several explosions. Governor Alexander Gussew announced that objects containing explosive material had begun to detonate. He provided no details. Ukrainian news portal "Ukrajinska Prawda," citing intelligence sources, reported that a 9000 square meter depot, containing rockets, tank ammunition, and artillery shells of the Russian forces, had been hit. There was no confirmation from the Russian side.

In social media, there were initially unverifiable video recordings of huge smoke clouds rising towards the sky. Witnesses reported explosions and smoke over the affected area, Podgorenski, about 190 kilometers south of the regional capital Woronesh. The state of emergency was declared there. Houses were evacuated.

Two older women were taken to the hospital, Gussew reported. Dozens of residents were reportedly housed in a temporary shelter in the school and provided with assistance, while others went to live with relatives. The emergency situation was caused by fallen debris from downed drones, according to Gussew.

The Woronesh region has been a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks in the past due to the fact that the Russian occupiers receive their military supplies from there. In June of the previous year, there were severe explosions in a fuel depot in the region.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow initially provided no information on the drone attack in the Woronesh region. In its statement, the Ministry only mentioned a new Ukrainian drone attack on the border region of Belgorod. The object was destroyed, it was stated.

The Ukraine conducts daily attacks against Russian territory as part of its defense against the ongoing Moscow invasion, which has lasted more than two years. However, the consequences are usually not comparable to the massive destruction and high number of casualties caused by Russian attacks against Ukraine. The Ukrainian military reported that the Russians had attacked over 80 infrastructure objects in the neighboring country since Saturday.
