Expert panel proposes collection of suggestions for overseeing artificial intelligence development
Following approximately a year of deliberations, an elite United Nations panel has presented a set of proposed guidelines for regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI). These suggestions will be scrutinized at an upcoming meeting, as announced by the UN on Thursday.
The panel suggests setting up an autonomous body that offers unbiased and factual research on AI, making this data readily available to the public. This is intended to bridge the present information gap, as AI advancements have predominantly occurred within a small circle of corporations.
Moreover, the UN panel advocates for an international discourse on AI regulation and the creation of certain principles. Furthermore, a fund should be allocated to aid less developed nations in integrating and implementing AI. This initiative would be overseen by a UN-affiliated AI department.
Since the debut of ChatGPT at the end of 2022, AI has been a frequent topic in news, prompting debates about its advantages and disadvantages. Regrettably, many nations have yet to implement regulations. In the European Union (EU), the "AI Act" serves as a legal backbone. In the United States, however, the industry is primarily governed through executive orders.
The Commission has adopted the UN panel's call for an international discourse on AI regulation and the creation of principle guidelines. Furthermore, the Commission has proposed allocating funds to help less developed nations integrate and implement AI, overseen by a UN-affiliated AI department.
