Cargo transportation - Experienced A1 motorway in Unna remains further closed

The Autobahn A1 remains closed in both directions due to a leaking hazardous materials transporter between Kamener Kreuz and Dortmund/Unna. This was announced by the Autobahn GmbH today. Gas is leaking from the truck there. The duration of the closure is still unclear according to the fire department.

Long-distance traffic on the heavily traveled Autobahn should be rerouted extensively, for example via A33 and A44 from Osnabrück or via A43 from Munster. In the immediate vicinity, drivers should switch to A2 and A45.

It is still unclear how the hazardous substance can be removed from the tanker, said Anna Gemünd, spokeswoman for the city of Unna, to the German Press Agency. Experts from the Fire Department are expected to arrive at the scene in the morning. There are several options, for example, controlled burning of the gas, said Gemünd. Then, areas may have to be evacuated. However, other options will also be considered to extract the gas. The truck has leaked deep-frozen Ethylene. This gas is easily flammable.

The heavily traveled A1, a central North-South connection through NRW towards Bremen, has been fully closed since Wednesday evening at 19 Uhr.

The leaking incident occurred between Kamener Kreuz and Dortmund/Unna, affecting the North Rhine-Westphalia segment of the Autobahn A1. The cargo transport involved a hazardous materials transporter, specifically carrying deep-frozen Ethylene. The Fire department is scheduled to arrive at the scene to address the situation in the morning. Due to this traffic disruption, alternative routes like A33 and A44 from Osnabrück or A43 from Munster are recommended for long-distance travelers.
