Executive from OpenAI steps down following involvement in dismissal of CEO Sam Altman.
"Following almost ten years with OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever has made the decision to leave the company. Excited for the next chapter, he'll soon unveil a uniquely personal project. He played a key role in the turbulent leadership change involving Sam Altman last year, which ultimately solidified Altman's spot as an AI industry frontrunner.
Sutskever's departure was announced just a day after OpenAI showcased its latest AI model, GPT-4o, impressing onlookers with its impressive features. Replacing him is Jakub Pachocki, previously OpenAI's research director.
Remember when Sutskever was the one who voted to dismiss Altman as CEO and chairman of the board? However, a short while later, he signed a letter asking for the whole board to resign and for Altman to come back? This happened about half a year ago, with Sutskever expressing concerns that Altman was moving AI technology too quickly.
However, only a few days after his firing, Sutskever backtracked, asking for the entire board to resign and for Altman to return. Altman didn't stay out long, returning as CEO five days after his firing. Sutskever then publicly apologized for his involvement in the company drama.
"I'm extremely sorry for my contribution to the board's actions," Sutskever stated on Twitter in November. "I never wanted to damage OpenAI. I adore everything we've achieved together, and I'll do all I can to rejoin the firm."
Since then, OpenAI has continued to promote advancements of its flagship offering, ChatGPT. Their latest model, revealed yesterday, is available to all users and allows for real-time spoken chats with the AI."
Sutskever significantly contributed to OpenAI's rise in the AI sector. In 2019, Altman, Sutskever, and Brockman formed OpenAI LP, a for-profit unit within the larger nonprofit company. The company was valued at an astounding $90 billion shortly afterwards.
Altman expressed "great sadness" over Sutskever's exit in a statement.
"I'm truly grateful for his contributions and committed to completing the mission we began together," Altman said.
