Exciting Innovations Set to Arrive in iPadOS 18 by Year's End
During WWDC 2024, Apple provided a sneak peek into the upcoming iPadOS 18, revealing several new features, some of which are AI-powered. The upcoming iPadOS 18 will include personalized customization options similar to iOS 18, like enhanced control over the home screen and control center. Apple has also developed a new calculator app for the iPad, which is more than just a regular calculator. It boasts Apple Intelligence integration, providing seamless functionality with the iPad and Apple Pencil.
A notable feature coming to the iPad is Math Notes, designed to make math learning easier. With Math Notes, users can jot down math problems and equations using the Apple Pencil, and the page will update automatically as they write. This allows students to create their own solutions in their natural penmanship and even change parts of the equation to see the answers change accordingly. The new calculator app will feature a built-in history, enabling users to review past calculations.
Improvements to the Apple Pencil experience include Smart Script, a feature that uses machine learning to make handwritten notes smoother and more legible. The goal is to make these corrections while maintaining the look and feel of your original handwriting.
Additionally, the Notes app will now offer a more user-friendly editing experience. Users will be able to erase chunks of text, and the system will adjust to fit the remaining content. For better organization, users can now select from five new highlighter colors to emphasize text in their notes. iPadOS 18 also includes a new tab bar that floats above apps, designed to help users navigate more easily. Apple TV+'s sidebar was inspired by this design change. The Photos app will also receive a redesign, creating a larger canvas for users to enjoy Apple's photographic enhancements.

Messaging features will see improvements as well, with the ability to schedule messages using the Send Later option. Additionally, the updated Safari-related features from macOS Sequoia will be included in iPadOS 18, including Highlights, the revamped Reader experience, and article summaries. The Passwords app will be available on iPad, providing access to wifi, web, and app passwords, as well as verification codes and security alerts across multiple devices.
SharedPlay will enable more drawing capabilities, enabling users to point out specific parts of a screen and request remote control. Game Mode will provide immersive Personalized Spatial Audio and support for upcoming titles like Assassin's Creed Shadows. Apple Maps, Reminders, and Calendar will also be updated with new functions to make these applications more user-friendly.
Accessibility features like Eye Tracking and Vocal Shortcuts will be available with iPadOS 18, while privacy controls like hidden apps and locked content will also be introduced, along with options to manage access to Bluetooth devices and the information they can access. For iPad models equipped with M-series chips, users can expect additional Apple Intelligence features, including Rewrite, Proofread, and Image Playground, later this year.
