Ex-policeman sentenced to long prison term

The US judiciary has already sentenced hundreds of people for the attack on the Capitol in Washington. An ex-policeman has now been given a particularly long prison sentence. In court, the loyal Trump supporter states that he still believes there was fraud in the presidential election.

A former police officer has been sentenced to more than eleven years in prison for the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. The sentence against Alan Hostetter was imposed by a federal court in the capital Washington. With the prison sentence of eleven years and three months, the court fell slightly short of the prosecution's demand of twelve and a half years in prison.

Hostetter will have to start his prison sentence in January. The ex-police officer from the state of California was found guilty in July on four charges, including conspiracy to obstruct Congress and rioting with a deadly or dangerous weapon. In court, he maintained to the end that the then US President Donald Trump's victory in the 2020 election had been stolen by massive electoral fraud.

Radical Trump supporters had stormed the Capitol in January 2021 to prevent Democrat Joe Biden's election victory from being confirmed. Shortly before the attack, Trump had called on his supporters to march to the Capitol and fight "come hell or high water". The incumbent, who was voted out of office, had previously falsely claimed for weeks that he had been deprived of re-election through large-scale electoral fraud.

Many prison sentences

According to the US Department of Justice, more than 1,230 people have now been charged in connection with the storming of the Capitol, which caused worldwide horror. Hundreds of them have been sentenced to prison.

Trump himself was indicted by the US federal judiciary in August for his attempts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election and thus keep himself in power. Similar charges were also brought in the southern state of Georgia against the Republican, who wants to run again in the presidential election in November next year.
