Every year again

A lot will change again for Germany's motorists in 2024: the price of fuel will rise, additional electronics will make buying a car more expensive and more mostly unpleasant things. We have summarized the most important things.

Background: What will change in 2024 - Every year again

CO2 tax increases The CO2 tax on fuels introduced at the beginning of 2021 will continue to rise in 2024 - and this will increase the price of petrol. The previously applicable fixed price for CO2 emissions will climb from 30 euros to 40 euros per tonne. Last year, an increase in the levy was suspended due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent turbulence on the energy market. Car insurance Type class classifications will change again from 2024. Around 13 million drivers will be affected. More than half of them will be placed in higher classifications, while the rest will benefit. There will also be changes to the regional classes.

Since September 2023, sales of electric cars in Germany have plummeted. In November, for example, just under 45,000 new electric cars were registered - almost a quarter fewer than in the same month last year. One of the main reasons for this is likely to be the expiry of subsidies for commercial e-cars at the end of August. Since then, subsidies have only been available for private individuals. The subsidy will now be further reduced next year. From January 1, 3,000 euros will only be available for electric cars with a net list price of up to 45,000 euros. There will no longer be a subsidy for e-cars that are more expensive. The funding program for private charging stations with solar power, on the other hand, will enter its second round in 2024: the KfW development bank is launching a new program with 200 million euros in 2024.

The big swap continues. Drivers born between 1965 and 1979 must exchange their driving licenses for the EU check card document by 19 January 2024. As a rule, the driver's license will remain the same as before, but the validity of the new license is limited to 15 years. The exchange costs 25 euros. Anyone who does not exchange their license on time risks a fine of ten euros. There are higher inspection fees for new drivers. Green sticker must go to general inspection Change of color on the license plate: If you have a green TÜV sticker, you must go to the general inspection in 2024. The new color if you pass the inspection: blue.

From July 7, 2024, all newly registered cars must have a number of additional assistance systems on board as standard. For example, similar to an airplane, a black box must be installed that records "event-related" driving data and can be evaluated in the event of an accident, for example. Furthermore, new cars must have an emergency brake assistant and an intelligent speed assistant. An "emergency brake light" is intended to warn following traffic in the event of heavy braking by simultaneously illuminating brake lights and hazard warning lights. Also on board as standard in future: a "reversing assistant", which provides the driver with information about what is behind the car.

The Euro 6e emissions standard has been in force for the type approval of new model series since September. From September 2024, the standard will also apply to all new registrations. The aim of Euro 6e is to bring the exhaust emission values measured on a test bench into better agreement with the values measured in real driving conditions.

From October 32024, only tires bearing the "Alpine" symbol (snowflake and mountain) on the sidewall will be allowed on the rims. The winter and all-season tires fulfill what the legislator calls the "situational winter tire requirement". This means that there is no general winter tire requirement in the cold season. But as soon as winter conditions prevail on the road, the car must be fitted with winter tires. Tires with the M+S symbol are no longer sufficient.

A new agreement between Switzerland and Germany will come into force in 2024. Anyone who is then flashed in the Alpine republic or even just parks incorrectly must expect that the Swiss fines will then be collected by the German authorities. However, the fine must be more than 80 francs. In view of the hefty fines in Switzerland, this is quickly reached. For example, anyone who is six to ten km/h too fast in town will have to pay 120 Swiss francs.

Before the June 2024 elections in the European Union, the EU wants to implement various legislative procedures - although no one knows yet whether or how they will come about. One of the plans is to revise the driving license rules. For example, the regular renewal of driving licenses is under discussion. A better flow of information for the cross-border prosecution of relevant traffic violations is being considered and driving bans imposed abroad after speeding should apply throughout the EU.
