European MPs ask for US aid for Ukraine

More than 100 members of parliament from European countries have called on the USA to release urgently needed financial aid for Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia. Ukraine needs the joint help of Europeans and Americans, the parliamentarians wrote in an open letter to their colleagues in Congress in Washington.

"Our shared commitment to freedom and democracy is at stake today." The Ukrainian army is under great pressure and the survival of Ukraine as an independent nation is under threat.

The signatures come from many EU member states and the European Parliament. The German signatories include Members of the Bundestag Michael Roth and Nils Schmid (both SPD), Norbert Röttgen and Roderich Kiesewetter (both CDU) and Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP).

The letter, dated Monday, addressed the demand from both US Republicans and Democrats that Europe must do more for its own security. The Europeans have collectively provided as much aid to Ukraine as the USA, it said. Defense spending in Europe had increased. "We advocate that our joint response to Russia's war of aggression is also the beginning of real burden-sharing in the transatlantic partnership."

A dispute between Republicans and Democrats in Congress is currently blocking the continuation of US aid for Ukraine requested by US President Joe Biden. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected in Washington on Tuesday to explain the threat to his country. Ukraine has been fending off a large-scale Russian invasion for almost 22 months.
