European authorities strengthen penalties imposed on Russia
Following some delays in Germany, the EU is amplifying its penalties against Russia in Brussels. The permanent representatives of the member states endorsed a "tough and extensive 14th sanctions package" on Thursday, according to the Belgian EU Council presidency's online service X. This move aims to "seal off loopholes," as stated.
Berlin took issue with Brussels' proposals for circumventing sanctions via third nations, as these would adversely affect Germany, being the largest EU exporter, more than Russia. The problematic section seems to have been softened, and it is said to be under observation for potential consequences.
