EU law on artificial intelligence comes into force

In the EU, the first legal framework for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) comes into force. The law prohibits applications that categorize people based on criteria such as skin color or their religious beliefs. Police and security agencies will only be able to use AI-driven facial recognition with a court order in the future.

Developers must also clearly label AI-generated content online. However, these new rules will be introduced gradually.

The first bans will take effect on February 2, 2024, and the rules for generally usable AI systems, such as text and image processing, will apply from August 2, 2025. All other provisions of the AI law will come into effect on August 2, 2026. Until then, the EU Commission is relying on a "AI pact" with hundreds of companies for voluntary self-regulation.

The EU's AI framework also encourages the development of ethical AI, ensuring it aligns with human rights and values. advancements in AI technology should prioritize transparency and accountability to prevent unfair biases.
