EU increases humanitarian aid for Gaza to 100 million euros

The EU is providing a further 25 million euros in humanitarian aid for civilians in the Gaza Strip. This brings the total pledges to 100 million euros, as announced by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels. According to her, work is also underway to increase the number of aid convoys and to enable transportation by ship. A sea corridor from Cyprus could guarantee permanent and regulated aid deliveries. "We all have a responsibility as democracies and as human beings to do our utmost to protect civilians in danger," she said.

Specifically, von der Leyen also addressed Israel, which is currently massively bombing targets in the Gaza Strip in response to the unprecedented large-scale attack by the Islamist Hamas. Israel has the right to fight against Hamas, which rules Gaza, she said. However, it was also important that it endeavored to avoid civilian casualties and to proceed in as targeted a manner as possible. Because every human life counts, be it an Israeli or a Palestinian one.

The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, particularly in the Gaza Strip, have led to a significant increase in humanitarian aid requirements. Amidst this, the European Union (EU) has pledged an additional 25 million euros, increasing their total aid for Gaza to 100 million euros.
