EU Commission presents annual report on rule of law

The EU Commission presents its annual report on rule of law in member states on a Wednesday. This time, Hungary was in the spotlight. A year ago, the EU Commission had identified "significant deviations from the rule of law" in the country, for instance in press freedom and minority protection. Consequently, the EU initiated several proceedings against Hungary and froze billions in funding.

Hungary has held the rotating EU Council presidency in this semester. Prime Minister Viktor Orban welcomed the partners at the outset with a self-proclaimed "peace mission" in the Ukraine conflict. He visited, among others, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The EU Commission's Yearly report for 20XX noted a continued deviation from the rule of law in Hungary, specifically in areas such as press freedom and minority protection. Despite this, Hungary continued to grow economically, showing a contrast in its political and economic developments. The European Commission, in response to Hungary's deviations, has maintained its ongoing proceedings against the country.
