European Union Commission Reinforces Measures Against Hate Speech Online - EU Commission: Kiev meets requirements for entering negotiations

The Ukraine and Moldova are thought to have met all the prerequisites required for discussing their entrance into the European Union, according to the EU Commission.

A spokeswoman from the Brussels-based agency stated, "We believe that all the steps taken by the two countries have been completed." This encompassed actions against corruption, a stronger effort to safeguard national minori-ties, and measures to lessen the control of oligarchs. The German government had already declared their belief that all the necessary conditions for starting EU accession talks with Ukraine in late May.

Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the accession negotiations will soon begin, as the Hungarian government reportedly still requests extra conditions for their approval of the Ukraine's inclusion in the EU. For instance, they're said to seek greater clarity regarding the protection of national minorities in unspecified documents for the negotiations. The reason behind this demand is that they hold concerns about the treatment of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. The Netherlands, too, has yet to address this matter in parliament.

The initiation of accession negotiations with the Ukraine and its neighboring country Moldova, which has been targeted by Russia, was determined at a EU summit in December. However, it was determined prior to these talks that all the reform requirements must first be fulfilled. Additionally, it is a precondition that all EU nations have concurred upon the negotiation framework, which enumerates guidelines and principles for the accession negotiations.

For the folks in the Ukraine, the inception of EU accession discussions is primarily regarded as an influential symbol that the fight against Russia for self-defense is worth pursuing. The duration from the start of the negotiations to EU membership is entirely uncertain; for example, Turkey, which has been an EU candidate since 1999, presently stands further from membership than all other prospective countries due to legal setbacks.
