EU calls for the Chancellor's word on irregular migration
The Union faction in the Bundestag has called on Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz to enforce an extension of stationary border controls at all German internal borders. "The Federal Police must be deployed for border controls at all German state borders," said Alexander Throm, the interior policy spokesman for the Union faction, to the Düsseldorf "Rheinische Post".
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has largely abolished these controls, thereby creating another security problem - "despite hundreds of smugglers caught, enforcement of arrest warrants, and detected illegal border crossings," Throm criticized.
"I expect the Federal Chancellor to immediately instruct the Interior Minister to reintroduce these border controls. Only at our borders can rejections take place," said the CDU politician.
From June 7 to July 19, reinforced controls were introduced at all German borders due to the European Football Championship, which subsequently expired. The controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland had already been extended until mid-December, and at the German-Austrian border until mid-November.
This is primarily about curbing irregular migration. The controls at the border between Germany and France, due to the Olympic Games, are still planned until September 30.
Scholz had previously hinted at strict controls of the German borders in the future. "We want to limit irregular migration. The numbers must go down," Scholz said to the "Saarbrücken Zeitung". "In general, it is our intention to continue to strictly control the German borders."
The call for extended border controls by the Union faction is partly motivated by the need to address irregular migration. Despite the ongoing efforts to enforce arrest warrants and detect illegal border crossings, the lack of such controls still poses a challenge.
