Estonia proposes a joint solution with Russia regarding the border dispute at the Narva River
Estonia has proposed to Russia joint investigation of the fairway in the Narva River for settling a border dispute. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tallinn has handed over a corresponding note to a Russian diplomat, the department announced.
Tensions between the two countries worsened in May when Russia removed markings in the border river at night. Tallinn protested against this, and Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock accused Russia of aggressive behavior. Moscow later justified the removal of the buoys by stating that Estonia had already posted sea markers on Russian territory.
Both sides apparently disagree on the fairway and thus the course of their shared border along the Narva, according to the statement. Since rivers naturally change their course, Estonia proposes a joint investigation of the fairway. "The last investigation of the Narva riverbed is almost 20 years old."
Russia has expressed reservations about Estonia's proposal for a joint investigation into the Narva River's fairway, citing past border-marking conflicts. The removal of Russian border-markings along the Narva River by Estonia near Narva, as noted by Moscow, remains a contentious issue. A potential solution proposal could involve establishing clear and mutually agreed upon border-markings along the shifting course of the river.
