Establishment of weapon-prohibited areas for Oktoberfest celebrations in Munich
At Munich Central Station and various other train stations during Oktoberfest, the Federal Police have enacted a no-weapons policy. This includes the main station, eastern station, as well as Donnersbergerbrücke and Hackerbrücke S-Bahn stops. this ban starts at 6:00 AM on September 21 and ends at 6:00 AM on October 7, as noted by the Federal Police.
During this timeframe, dangerous items such as weapons, imitation weapons, bladed objects, and all types of knives are strictly prohibited at these stations or in their immediate surroundings. The main objective is to minimize criminal activity and safeguard both passengers and police personnel from any potential attacks.
Discussion on Security Post-Solingen Terrorist Attack
The Federal Police has the authority to establish temporary weapon-free zones under the Federal Police Act to mitigate potential risks. The establishment of a similar zone was seen at Nuremberg Central Station in the past.
In the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Solingen, the safety of attendees at the world's largest folk festival, which brings in millions of visitors worldwide, became a significant concern in Munich. As a response, the city revised its security plan and set up metal detectors at festival entrances. Weapons have been banned from the festival grounds altogether.
The October Festival, being a major attraction in Munich, has strict weapon restrictions. Just like Nuremberg Central Station, a temporary weapon-free zone was established during the festival to ensure safety, following the terrorist attack in Solingen.
