Environment Minister urges constitutional change to support flood-prevention policies.

Environmental Minister Steffi Lemke is advocating for a constitutional adjustment to allocate funds towards flood control, climate adaptation, and shielding. In a pre-release to "Spiegel," she proposed, "We require massive funding for flood protection, climate adaptation, and climate safeguarding over the next few years."

A collaborative action on climate adaptation requires a constitutional amendment, as stated by Lemke. This method would enable the federal government to collaborate with municipalities and states on investing more cash for these objectives.

Lemke discussed the potential suspension of the debt brake in the same conversation with "Spiegel." "We can't go further if we keep ignoring the truth. We must act, and that includes reevaluating all financial policies," she said. Still, there's no political consensus for this measure. Lemke's statements came as severe floods affected southern Germany, particularly Bavaria.
