England: Surge in Migrants Cross English Channel, Breaking Previous Records

Amidst Rishi Sunak's pledges to curb illegal immigration via the English Channel, the inflow of arrivals through this route has skyrocketed to an all-time high in the first half of the year. As per the British Press Association, preliminary stats from the Home Office reveal a whopping 12,901 individuals have voyaged from France in cramped boats this year, marking a 17% surge compared to the same period last year and an 8% boost over the previous record half-year of 2022.

During the parliamentary election campaign in July, PM Sunak made migration a priority issue. With a tough legislative approach to turn the tide and stem the tide of boats, the Tory government leader aims to address the issue.

Those migrating to the UK without proper documentation will be relocated to Rwanda to lodge their asylum claims, irrespective of their origin, with no return to the UK envisaged. However, it's believed that the controversial Rwanda strategy won't see the light of day, as the Labour Party, expected to secure the election win, has vowed to abolish the policy.

The UK welcomed 45,774 unauthorized migrants in 2022, reflecting a notable decline from the previous year. Nevertheless, critics argue that the numbers are still excessive, viewing the current statistics as a real Form of their apprehensions.
