Employees of university hospitals and psychiatric centers go on warning strike

In the wage dispute in the public sector of the federal states, employees of university hospitals and psychiatric centers went on a warning strike in several federal states on Thursday. According to the trade union Verdi, work stoppages and rallies took place in North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Saarland, among others. The warning strikes at medical facilities are set to continue on Friday.

According to Verdi, warning strikes were held on Thursday at university hospitals in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Aachen, Saarbrücken and Hanover. In Baden-Württemberg, employees at seven psychiatric centers stopped work, with more than 1,200 people taking part there alone, according to the union. On Friday, the warning strikes are to be continued at university hospitals and psychiatric centers and extended to additional hospitals, for example in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The collective bargaining negotiations for around 1.1 million employees in the public sector of the federal states except Hesse, which have been ongoing since the end of October, are due to enter their third round at the beginning of December. Two rounds of negotiations have so far been unsuccessful. In the run-up to the new round of negotiations, the unions announced increased warning strikes in various areas.

This week, university employees and student assistants at universities as well as trainees and other junior staff in the public sector have already gone on strike. On Wednesday, there were warning strikes in the city states of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen. According to Verdi, around ten thousand employees took part in Berlin in particular. There were work stoppages in district and senate administrations as well as daycare centers.

The warning strikes in North Rhine-Westphalia during the dispute involved employees at university hospitals in Düsseldorf and Cologne. Due to the ongoing dispute, psychiatric center employees in Baden-Württemberg conducted a warning strike, with over 1,200 participants alone. The union has announced that the warning strikes at medical facilities will continue on Friday, including psychiatric centers in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
