Emotional funeral service for Rosalynn Carter
The former First Lady of the USA, Rosalynn Carter, has been honored with an emotional funeral service - high-ranking guests paid their last respects to her. The 99-year-old former US President Jimmy Carter also attended the ceremony in a church in Atlanta in the southern US state of Georgia on Tuesday. It was a rare public appearance by the Democrat, who was marked by illness - half reclining in a wheelchair in the front row of the church, covered with a blanket. His wife Rosalynn died just over a week ago at the age of 96.
Among the guests at the ceremony were US President Joe Biden and his wife Jill. All living former First Ladies of the USA also paid their last respects to Rosalynn Carter: Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. The former US Secretary of State was accompanied by her husband, former President Bill Clinton. The Clintons and Michelle Obama had previously traveled to Atlanta together with the Bidens on board Air Force One.
Married for 77 years
Rosalynn Carter's health had deteriorated rapidly before her death. In May, it became public that she was suffering from dementia. She was last receiving palliative care at home. Jimmy Carter has also been receiving palliative care with his family since mid-February. He has been struggling with health problems for several years and is no longer taking any further medical steps. The Democratic politician from Georgia was US President from 1977 to 1981.
The Carters were married for 77 years. Rosalynn Carter had a significant influence on the role of First Lady in the USA. She later became particularly active in the field of mental health. She is considered a pioneer in the fight for better treatment. "She served our country as one of the most active and successful First Ladies," said a long-time colleague at the funeral service. Rosalynn Carter's son Chip Carter said: "My mother was the glue that held our family together."
- The current US President, Joe Biden, and his wife Jill, were among the guests at Rosalynn Carter's emotional funeral service, paying their respects to the former First Lady who was the wife of another former President, Jimmy Carter.
- It's notable that the Carters, married for an impressive 77 years, shared a history in the government, with Jimmy Carter serving as US President from 1977 to 1981, and Rosalynn playing a significant role as First Lady, leaving a lasting impact on the role and mental health advocacy.
- The service for Rosalynn Carter, who dedicated much of her post-presidency life to the cause of mental health, was attended by numerous former First Ladies, including Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton, all of whom acknowledged her influential and active contributions to the role of First Lady in US history.
