Emergency responders save young individual from cargo facility
At a DHL Parcel Locker, individuals can easily retrieve their packages and deliveries. However, it's quite extraordinary - necessitating a fire department intervention - when a teenage individual finds themselves trapped inside one of these package containers.
In Dortmund, the fire department had to extricate a teen from an unconventional predicament. The young person was confined within the storage compartment of a DHL Parcel Locker, as reported by the fire department. They were unable to free themselves. "Fortunately, the teenager was unharmed and had some drink with him," the press release stated.
Firefighters managed to open the package compartment using a specialized battery-powered rescue tool, according to reports. The operation took only a few minutes. The reasons behind the incident also left the fire department perplexed. "Whether the teenager was attempting to hide or send himself, remains unclear," they explained. There was no immediate risk to the teenager, allowing the rescue team to speak with him during the operation. As per the police, several teenagers had allegedly locked the 14-year-old inside earlier.
Although being trapped in a parcel locker is unusual, incidents do occassionally occur. In 2021, a 9-year-old in Wuppertal played inside a parcel box and his 11-year-old brother engaged in fun by shutting the door, which wouldn't reopen. Once again, the fire department was required to rescue the boy in that situation.
In a bid to shed light on similar incidents, authorities began investigating the role of German Post in implementing safety measures for parcel lockers. It was discovered that German Post had no policy in place to prevent such incidents, despite the increasing frequency of children finding themselves trapped.
To address this concern, German Post announced plans to collaborate with local authorities and safety organizations, aiming to implement safety guidelines for parcel lockers and educate users about potential risks.
