Elderly Individual Convicted for Assaulting Green Party Politician
At a rally in Göttingen at the end of May, an individual targets and injures Green Party legislator, Marie Kollenrott, on her left arm. The 66-year-old suspect, who has a history of using Nazi symbols, is ordered to pay a fine of 1600 Euro for causing bodily harm. In addition, he must pay 600 Euro in compensation, according to the judgment of the Amtsgericht Göttingen. The incident occurred in Göttingen's city center during a political event, where the suspect physically assaulted the 39-year-old on multiple occasions on her left upper arm, after previously verbally abusing her, shouting, "You dirty Greens."
When the politician tried to confront him, the attacker immediately threatened and attacked her, before fleeing. After he noticed that she was pursuing him and taking pictures with her phone, he attacked her again, but was stopped by bystanders. Two witnesses confirmed these events during the trial. The judgment involved charges of bodily harm in two cases and one count of verbal abuse.
The authorities apprehended the suspect shortly after the incident near the crime scene. Later, it was revealed that he had previously been recognized for using Nazi symbols and had also been penalized for it.
Injuries and Sleepless Nights
Kollenrott claimed to have sustained bruises on her left upper arm and scratches on her right forearm, some of which still caused pain ten days after the attack. The deputy also mentioned suffering from sleep problems in the days following the incident and that the incident would likely affect future campaign events. Throughout the trial, she appeared anxious and avoided direct eye contact with the defendant. The prosecution demanded a fine of 1800 Euro, to be paid in installments. The prosecutor emphasized that the attack was an attack not only on the legislator but also on democracy itself. The need for police presence at political events should not be a pleasant reality.
The suspect, who showed little interest during the trial, initially denied the allegations. "It's all bullshit," the 66-year-old declared before the Amtsgericht Göttingen. He admitted to touching the politician, however, and expressed his desire to wait for a DNA test. This test, he claimed, would prove his innocence.
