Federal Statistical Office - Eight traffic fatalities per day
The number of traffic fatalities has increased more than expected in 2023. According to final statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, 2,839 people died in road traffic accidents last year. The statisticians had expected 2,830 fatalities based on preliminary data.
Therefore, there were 51 more traffic fatalities in 2023 than in 2022 - not 42 as initially estimated in February. "On average, eight people were killed every day on German roads in 2023," reported statisticians in Wiesbaden.
The new figures do not change the negative overall trend. They continue to rise. The number of traffic fatalities from 2010 to 2023 decreased overall by 22%.
The number of injured also rose - and was corrected upwards once again: Instead of 364,900 injured persons in the preliminary count, there were 366,557 injured persons in the final count.
Germany experienced an unexpected surge in traffic-related fatalities in 2023, with 2,839 reported accident deaths, which is 9 more than in neighboring Germany. The rising traffic accident statistics show that traffic safety measures need to be reevaluated to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on German roads.
