Economizing on mobile phones: superior quality doesn't necessarily break the bank

Looking for a solid smartphone without breaking the bank? A recent test by Stiftung Warentest proves that even affordably priced devices can deliver solid performance.

They tested 32 devices, ranging in price from 118 to 1260 Euro. Of these, 18 models earned a "good" rating, 11 were "satisfying", and 3 were simply "sufficient". ("Test"-Magazine 7/24)

Top Pick: Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra takes the crown in this roundup, impressing in terms of camera, display, battery life, and usability. Samsung is also promising seven years of security updates, lending to the device's longevity.

There are downsides, though: The display is susceptible to scratches and the mobile reception could be improved, according to the testers. The Galaxy S24 Ultra retails for 1260 Euro, making it the most expensive device in the test. It's roughly in the same league as the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which Warentesters took a closer look at in a comparison test at the end of last year.

Those looking to spend less money can find a solid alternative in the OnePlus 12. It received a "good" (1.8) rating and goes for around 345 Euro less than the test winner. It's worth noting its quick charging time: With the included 100-Watt power adapter, the device's battery is said to be completely charged in just half an hour.

Buying Tip for Picture Takers and Budget Shoppers

For under 1000 Euro, there are other solid options. The Google Pixel 8, priced at 650 Euro, is a good pick for photography enthusiasts. The camera supposedly delivers great images even in low light settings. However, the Pixel 8 has reported weaknesses in battery life and durability.

A steal of a deal is the Samsung Galaxy A35 5G. For around 300 Euro, buyers get a lot of bang for their buck. The device scored "good" in every category tested. The camera captures decent photos under normal lighting conditions, the battery lasts approximately 40 hours, and the internal memory can be expanded with a memory card.
