Flute catastrophe - Ebling: Sharing memories important for cohesion

The collective remembrance of the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley three years ago and the mourning for the victims is important, in the opinion of Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister Michael Ebling (SPD), to strengthen unity. "He is really big in the region," Ebling told the German Press Agency. He had previously participated in a memorial service in Sinzig.

There are numerous "small and large bright spots" in the rebuilding process in the Ahr Valley, Ebling added. In this context, the minister referred to the Kurviertel in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and school construction projects in Sinzig. Communities are working at a high tempo to advance the rebuilding process.

However, there is a bottleneck at present for companies and planners who are needed for the numerous rebuilding projects. In addition, it is necessary to win people over to engage permanently in the Ahr Valley and to speak about future issues, such as tourism, Ebling said.

During the flood disaster on July 14 and 15, 2021, 136 people had lost their lives in Rhineland-Palatinate, of whom 135 were in the Ahr region and one in the Trier area. One person is still missing. In the neighboring North Rhine-Westphalia, 49 people died in the floods due to extreme rainfall.
