Dutch police arrest Greta Thunberg
Currently, it's no longer a new experience for the world-renowned climate activist: Greta Thunberg was arrested by the police during a protest in the Netherlands, joining other demonstrators in blocking a street. The protest was not only against the climate policy of the new Dutch government.
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested during a demonstration in the Netherlands. Police in The Hague reportedly took the 21-year-old into custody, according to Swedish media. The protests were allegedly organized by the organization Extinction Rebellion (XR). The A12 highway was reportedly temporarily blocked, and the police used water cannons against the demonstration.
Images and videos show Thunberg being hit by a water cannon before the police individually arrested or removed the group of approximately 50 protesters. For some time, the A12, which runs through the center of The Hague, has been the focus of protests. Groups of demonstrators had also occupied another street near the parliament. Initially, further protests were announced for the following day, but they were canceled due to the threat of storms.
Goal? Eliminate subsidies
The activists aim to achieve the withdrawal of all government subsidies for fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas in the Netherlands. In a statement, XR criticized the plans of the new, right-wing Dutch government as "catastrophic" not only in terms of climate policy but also in terms of migration and housing policy.
Thunberg was arrested in April during protests in Den Haag. Police also took the activist into custody at the end of May during pro-Palestinian protests against Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Malmo. Two weeks ago, Thunberg was also arrested during an XR protest in the Finnish capital Helsinki.
Greta Thunberg's arrest during climate protests in the Netherlands sparked international headlines, with similar incidents occurring in other European cities. Recently, Thunberg participated in politics-fuelled protests against the Dutch government's climate policy and support for fossil fuels in Den Haag.
