Horse racing - Duhner Wattrennen attracts many people to the beach

Under shining sun, the Duhner Watt Racing has started at the North Sea. The traditional Horse Racing event, according to the organizers, is unique worldwide - a 1200 meter long oval racing track is created on the seabed before Cuxhaven for this purpose.

"We have dreamy weather. The beach is very crowded", said Ralf Drossner, the spokesperson of the race, in the morning.

In this year, there are ten races, of which three are Gallop Races with Thoroughbreds, six Trotting Races with drivers in sulkies, and one Trotting Race with riders. 90 starters have registered, including some from the Netherlands.

The Duhner Watt Racing has been taking place since 1902, and this summer marks the 88th edition. The races must be completed within six hours on the track - as long as the seabed remains dry due to the ebb.

Visitors and spectators can also place their bets and hope for winnings. Niedersachsen's Science Minister Falko Mohrs (SPD) is scheduled to present the Wanderpokal of the Niedersachsen Minister-President to the winner after the sixth race. The last race is planned for 3 p.m., followed by the After-Turf-Party behind the dike.

This annual event, which has been happening since 1902 and is now in its 88th edition, attracts both local and international tourists, with over 90 starters signed up this year, including some from neighboring Netherlands. The beautiful weather and variety of races, including gallop races, trotting races, and even a trotting race with riders, make it a popular destination for leisure and sports enthusiasts.
