The Rhineland-Palatinate's Chief, Dreyer, decided to call it quits after a grueling tenure. Her party, the SPD, unanimously elected Schweitzer as her replacement. At a press conference, Dreyer expressed her emotional farewell, stating, "I depart with a heavy heart, I'm not weary." She explained that her energy reserves weren't recharging as swiftly as before, forcing her to exert more effort to fulfill her duties as Minister-President, eventually reaching her limits.
The Rhineland-Palatinate SPD also endorsed Schweitzer as Dreyer's successor at the state helm, with Dreyer herself praising him as the perfect choice for this critical juncture earlier.
Dreyer also recounted the catastrophic flood disaster in the Ahr Valley 2021 as a pivotal moment in her life. In recent times, numerous crises have intersected, according to the SPD politician. Alongside refugee movements, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the "worst natural disaster in our country's history in the Ahr Valley," Dreyer remarked, ushering in a profound shift in her life. "It's also a sorrowful turning point for me, splitting my life into a time before and after it."
Dreyer faced criticism over the Ahr Valley flood disaster
These crises took a toll on the people and created divisions in Rhineland-Palatinate, Dreyer admitted. Previously, Dreyer had faced criticism for failing to tender an apology over the Ahr Valley flood disaster.
The Federal Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, acknowledged Dreyer's resignation "with utmost respect." In Berlin, the government spokeswoman, Christiane Hoffmann, lauded Dreyer as an accomplished head of a traffic light coalition government. Hoffmann noted Dreyer's high regard as a trustworthy and popular politician.
The 63-year-old has been in office since 2013 and currentlyrules in coalition with the Greens and FDP. She has been battling multiple sclerosis for many years.
