Downloading Google Maps Directions Prior to Losing Mobile Connection
Going for a trip out in the wilderness? Maybe you're headed to a place with poor internet connectivity? Make sure to get offline maps from Google before you go. With these downloaded maps, you can navigate through unfamiliar places with ease, even when your GPS can't connect to data networks.
Downloading Offline Maps for Specific Destinations
Google allows you to pre-save maps from all over the world, so you're not limited to your local area. You can store multiple maps on your device for an entire year.
Open the Google Maps app and type in the city, area, or country that you're planning to visit. Once you've made your selection, access the details screen.
On an Android device, swipe up on the menu; on an iOS device, go to the end of the options and tap the Download option. If you're in full-screen mode, tap the three-dot Menu button in the top-right corner and select the Download offline map.

You'll see a sneak peek of the map you're downloading. Zoom in and out to adjust the coverage. When you're satisfied, tap the "Download" button. You may be asked to confirm the download based on your device and app settings if you're using mobile data.
Downloading Offline Maps for Your Current Location or Area
Even if you're not planning ahead, Google Maps has a handy feature to download offline maps for your current location. This can be useful if you're out in an area with weak internet connection and find a spot with Wi-Fi.
Open the Google Maps app and tap your profile picture in the top-right corner. Go to the Offline Maps section and choose the Create your own map option.

Now that you have some custom maps downloaded, consider making a few adjustments for a more enjoyable experience. From your Profile picture menu, go to Offline maps. You'll see a list of all your saved maps. Tap the three-dot menu button on any map to see options to Update or Rename it. I recommend giving your downloaded maps unique names for easy identification.
While you're here, also enable the automatic update feature for Maps. This will ensure your downloaded maps stay up-to-date without having to manually update them. Tap the Gear icon in the top-right corner of the Offline Maps page, then toggle on the Auto-update offline maps feature. You can also enable the Auto-download recommended maps option to have Google download new maps for you.
Finally, before leaving the page, change the Download preferences to only download maps over Wi-Fi. This can help you save on data charges when traveling.
