Mary L. Trump is the granddaughter of Fred Trump, who founded the Trump dynasty in the first half of the 20th century. This man had five children with Mary Anne MacLeod: Maryanne, Fred Jr., Elizabeth, Donald, and Robert. Fred Jr. is the father of Mary L. Trump.

The eldest son of real estate entrepreneur Fred Trump Sr. fell out of favor with his father when he decided to become a pilot. The result: His younger brother Donald inherited the family business.

Fred Jr. succumbed to alcoholism and died in 1981 from its consequences. Donald Trump commented on his elder brother: "He taught me every day: 'Look at that loser, the one I'm stuck with. In September 2020, Mary Trump sued her uncle Donald, her aunt Maryanne, and the estate of her deceased uncle Robert, claiming they had defrauded her of millions of dollars from her shares in her grandfather Fred Trump's real estate portfolio. In November 2022, the lawsuit was dismissed.

In September 2021, Donald Trump sued Mary for at least 100 million dollars, claiming she had provided the "New York Times" with financial documents for a revealing 2018 report on his wealth and the family finances.
