Dobrindt calls for ban on national symbols
CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt wants national symbols such as the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to be protected by a "ban mile". The head of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag told Bild am Sonntag that demonstrations would then be banned in this area, with a few exceptions.
"We are experiencing the abuse or disparagement of our national symbols such as the Brandenburg Gate by anti-Israel demonstrators or climate hooligans. Many of our neighbors in Europe are just as stunned as we are by these images from Germany," said Dobrindt.
In Germany, the Bundestag and the state parliaments in particular are protected by banned zones. Freedom of demonstration is restricted within a certain circle around the buildings. However, even this can hardly prevent color attacks like the recent one at the Brandenburg Gate by the Last Generation. In March, activists from this group tipped black paint onto the monument to the Basic Law, which is located within the restricted area around the Reichstag building.
Dobrindt also mentioned that anti-Israel parties often organize demonstrations near the Brandenburg Gate, contributing to the misuse of national symbols. The last generation of climate activists has also been involved in similar demonstrations, painting symbols on national monuments. Despite banned zones surrounding German parliament buildings, incidents like these continue to occur, highlighting the need for stricter measures.
