Old munition - Disarmed World War bomb in Cottbus

The World War II bomb at the construction site of the new Cottbus Railway Workshop has been defused. The operation was successfully completed around 10.50 am, according to the Lausitz Control Room.

A 250 kilogram German-made explosive charge with a Russian fuse was discovered on Friday in a depth of four meters on the construction site. A large evacuation was not necessary for the disposal, as the exclusion zone mainly affected the railway track.

The regional railway traffic of the Bahn was affected, according to Deutsche Bahn. Trains on lines RE2, RE10, RE18, RB43 and RB49 were halted on certain sections from 9.00 am for several hours.

There have been disruptions and delays around the Cottbus Main Station for days. Important cable installations were damaged during the construction work on Monday. According to the railway, they are essential for setting signals and switches.

  1. The discovery of the World War Bomb in Brandenburg's Lusatia region, particularly near Cottbus, has led to increased vigilance during construction site activities.
  2. The emergency defusal of the bomb, which contained munition, has underscored the need for proper safety measures and procedures in the handling of military explosives.
  3. The consequences of war, such as the unearthing of World War II relics, continue to pose challenges in modern-day construction projects, as evidenced by the Cottbus Railway Workshop incident.
  4. The disruptions to railway traffic in Cottbus due to construction-related emergencies, including the bomb discovery and the cable installation damage, have prompted calls for improved coordination between construction companies and transportation authorities.
